Samsung are really good, for the price you are paying make sure it is 1080p
There is no such thing as 1080p in the UK so don’t waste your time asking about it. Also, all tv’s in your price range are HD-Ready. There in no such thing as “full HD” on any set, that’s just an advertising puff.
God knows where some people get these things from – probably the USA.
LCD sets get very expensive above 32″, although they give a better picture and (apparently) last longer. So you’re probably best looking for a plasma to keep within budget. You will need a dvd player to match the tv too.
There are no HD broadcasts on Freeview at the moment so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
On this forum you will get people recommending their own favourite model so I won’t tell you to buy a Panasonic in case you think I’m biassed. (which I am, they’re better value than Sony and better built than Philips).
What you should do is go to a Good tv shop (definately NOT Curry’s or Curry’s digital or Comet or Argos) and discuss your needs with an educated assistant.
In this respect John Lewis (or one of the others in the JL chain) stand head and shoulders above the rest. They have a huge selection and assistants who are well trained in all aspects of modern televisions.

Warning: This is a warning you are not gonna get from the dealers or the manufactures. LCDs have very fragile, very breakable PLASTIC screens. Screens because there are two. The “inner” screen of my 7 mos. old Sony Bravia 42″ is broken. Broken by a 34 lb., 3year old throwing an empty plastic cup. Plastic because it can be and it prevents the screen from being reflective. It also makes them CHEAPER to make. No warranty, no repair. If you have children or children visit, do not buy LCDs.
Plasma have a glass screen like all other TVs except LCDs. Both are cheap to operate depending on where you live: 3-41/2 cents/hour for plasma and 2-3 cent/hour for LCD.
Plasma is better 42″ or larger and in dark rooms or basements and for viewing sports. Most plasma brands also have anti-glare coatings. When I can get another $2000 together I will get plasma.
