out of the two, i would go with the toshiba.
Have seen them side by side, and the toshiba has it ( close call ).
But what worries me is the reliabitly of philips nowadays.

I’d go with the philips myself
To be quite honest, if I were you, I would avoid both. The best LCD is Sony , in what ever model you choose. Those other two have lots of things going wrong with them.
Go to a store and compare them side by side and get the one which has the picture you personally like the best. One that might be perfect for me might give you a headache watching and the one you like might give me a headache watching it.
That has got to be more of a direct comparison more than anything else.
i have had a couple of toshibas and a philips and i prefer the toshibas.
but i recently bought an lg and the features on it blew me away
not sure sorry – maybe go to a store with both and ask their advice
plasma is better than lcd!
I couldn’t say which one would last longer or is more reliable, but from experience, Philips generally has more issues, so would recommend the Toshiba. Saying that, recently at my work, we are going through a bad patch of faulty Toshibas! (Dead pixels)
I would probably recommend Sony or Samsung LCDs. Biggest sellers in the world! More reliable.
Hope that helps
if you’re thinking 42″ consider Panasonic’s TH- 42 PX75 model as a comparison. It has outsold all our 42″ lcd tv’s in our store(sears).
Why? Colours are better on plasma than lcd, even a 5 element lamps on lcd are not close to plasmas colour range. Action (response time) and viewing angle and black reproductions are better as well (paticularly Panasonic). Image retention or burn is a thing of the past life span is the same as well. Stay away from myths os tech bashing opinions too! We have all tvs hooked to HD and the Panasonics have the best pictures. THere 42″ for the price is the best bang for the buck. Some other features are anti glare screen high contrast and the best blacks and colour accuracyand is energystar rated; anywhere there is pblack on the screen that pixel is being discharged electricity.
On SD signals (CNN reruns ect.) the Panasonics colours whrer warmer no staircasing on edges. Looks great with anaolog.
FutureShop is selling it for 1639.99 CDN. That is a steal.
Sharp is a good 42″ lcd comparison an d check out th Vertical Bands article on this website as well.
