  1. XenonAud says:

The longevity for plasma or LCD is about 60,000-65,000 hours.
One of the Sony LCD HDTV models offer a superior picture
-preferably the XBR line which has the ultimate in quality.
If you cannot find a Sony in your price range, then consider
Westinghouse (1080p models), Samsung, or Panasonic.

lcd as in plasma the gas leaks

  4. RRM says:

LCD is the way froward, it lasts longer and doesn’t suffer from screen burn.

  5. Irishbir says:

Go for LCD the plasma loses picture quality after a while

LCD is definitively gaining momentum for the big screens (would have been a different answers a couple of year back).
Samsung has launched the 1st 100Hz 40″ LCD flat panel recently (LE40M91), solving one of the major issues of LCD (rémanence, whatever it’s called in English). Reviews are good, price (in France) is comparable with your budget.
    Cheers,

Good question… i am saving up myself and not sure which one to buy as my mates have both kinds and all have there own opinion and even the shops dont really give you a solid answer which one to buy so i will be watching this space…thanks ;-)

Tesco’s are selling a 42″ for £800, dont know what type though might be worth a look on there website

  9. twentyse says:

LCD is the most reliable we think but time will tell! One of it’s outstanding features is that the screen does not reflect the light from windows or lamps. Yer pays yer money and takes yer choice. I recommend the Sony Bravia KDL40X2000. It is the best panel TV on the market but will cost about £2000. Second choice is any LG TV. In about five years there will be a new format called OCD or whatever, giving an even better picture making all else redundant. Bearing in mind everything in hi-tech gets better and cheaper, now is a good time to buy a KDL40X2000.
