Problem Using Lcd Tv As Second Pc Monitor?

I have a problem when I connect my PC to my 32″ Panasonic LCD TV. I’m using a regular VGA monitor cable (or whatever it’s called) but sometimes I get a picture on the TV and sometimes I don’t. Sometimes, I get an image on the TV, but it is just a portion from my desktop wallpaper – even when the image displayed on the laptop screen shows NOTHING of the wallpaper at all! There seems to be no rhyme or reason behind it – every time I connect, I get different results!
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have been trying my best with the display control panel but there seems no pattern to what happens when I adjust the settings.
Thanks!
Tim

If possible, try a digital connection instead. Your Panny LCD HDTV should have HDMI ports, and if your computer has DVI ports, you can use a DVI-to-HDMI cable for a totally digital connection. Might work better than analog VGA.
