I actually saw a vizio that looked good at costco for 699.99 that was 1080p, 42″, LCD. But I don’t understand what contrast ratio is. The picture looks great compared to my standard tv but I noticed it’s not as bright as the more expensive tv’s. What is contrast ratio? And what would be the ideal ratio? Thanks

If you look on your remote you should find a button labeled as ‘Aspect’ and this is the one you need. Simply push it and your display image will switch, the option 16:9 Standard the one which will give a true wide screen picture.
Now be aware that this will NOT make shows broadcast on TV fill your screen as most are still broadcast in a 4:3 full screen format and you will have vertical ‘Bars’ bracketing either side of the picture though DVDs and signals broadcast in wide screen WILL fill the screen.
Don’t despair, that ‘Aspect’ button has more magic up it’s sleeve. You will notice other options as you scroll and these are most likely 4:3 expanded and 16:9 zoom, either of these providing a full, screen filling display but in different ways and at a slight cost to the true picture.
4:3 expanded goes about it’s job by enlarging the picture by ‘Expanding’ the natural picture, the down side being a slight distortion to the image with everything appearing slightly squat. Now 16:9 zoom has no such distortion, it’s mission accomplished by ‘Cropping’ the outer edges of a normal 16:9 picture by zooming in. Sure, no distortion but you lose a lot of the screen to the cutting.
There, now you’ll get to where you want AND be prepared for what you’ll find when you get there, I hope it helps. Good luck, happy viewing and have a great weekend.
