I’m shopping for a LCD flat screen tv. Nothing special I just need at least a 42″ with 1080p. I actually saw a vizio that looked good at costco for 699.99 that was 1080p, 42″, LCD. But I don’t understand what contrast ratio is. The picture looks great compared to my standard tv but I noticed it’s not as bright as the more expensive tv’s. What is contrast ratio? And what would be the ideal ratio? Thanks

I am Planning to Buy a 32 Inch LCD TV. & I have a bevy of choices. I need answers to the Questions to decide which LCD TV to Buy? Is Contrast Ratio of 6000:1 really far superior to a contrast ratio of 1300:1? Does a higher Contrast Ratio make the TV viewing more Pleasurable? What about the different Connectivity Slots? I’ll be thankful if I get some honest answers.

I can buy an LG, 42 “, LCD TV with 50,000:1 contrast ratio, 1080P for around $1350.00. I see another model with the same specs except a contrast ratio of 15,000:1 going for $1250.00.
Should I get the cheaper model? Does the difference in these contrast ratios make a big difference in picture quality?
Any advice would be useful.

I’m looking at a Sharp LCD 42″ 1080p tv with a native contrast ratio of 1200:1. Is this alright? Also it says it has a 6ms response time. What does this mean and is it an alright spec. Any help would be appreciated

am trying to buy a 32″ LCD TV (ok i know sony bravia is good but as of now my budget is limited only to more or less $1,000)
So samsung,Philips, JVC and Sharp is in in my budget
but am confused about “contrast ratio”
samsung has 7000:1
philips 1000:1
etc…
and all of them has 1366×768 pixels only the contrast ratio confused me..

Here is the top choice in LCD for 32″ model Samsung, Panasonic, Sony and Toshiba. They have the best customer service support center of all the tvs in the market. The Panasonic model C12 was on sale at Best Best last week for $399. I tried to purchase one but they had sold out of the model.

If you look on your remote you should find a button labeled as ‘Aspect’ and this is the one you need. Simply push it and your display image will switch, the option 16:9 Standard the one which will give a true wide screen picture.
Now be aware that this will NOT make shows broadcast on TV fill your screen as most are still broadcast in a 4:3 full screen format and you will have vertical ‘Bars’ bracketing either side of the picture though DVDs and signals broadcast in wide screen WILL fill the screen.
Don’t despair, that ‘Aspect’ button has more magic up it’s sleeve. You will notice other options as you scroll and these are most likely 4:3 expanded and 16:9 zoom, either of these providing a full, screen filling display but in different ways and at a slight cost to the true picture.
4:3 expanded goes about it’s job by enlarging the picture by ‘Expanding’ the natural picture, the down side being a slight distortion to the image with everything appearing slightly squat. Now 16:9 zoom has no such distortion, it’s mission accomplished by ‘Cropping’ the outer edges of a normal 16:9 picture by zooming in. Sure, no distortion but you lose a lot of the screen to the cutting.

Im in the market for a smaller LCD TV, the high end 26 inch and lower seem to have under 1000:1. 32 ” and up seem to be significantly higher. Im looking at a Phillips with 32″ 3200:1. Some 32’s have 8000:1 +. And some seem to be around the 1000:1. Im wondering for that size of LCD TV (32″).. what is the best contrast ratio?

simple as that really. never had a 4:3 ratio dvd and wondered how it comes out on my 32″ sony tv? dont want to buy it to find out its tiny or doesnt fit or some such thing.
