What minimum requirements should I be looking for for a 37″ LCD or 42″ plasma TV? Specs like resolution and stuff. Thanks

am trying to buy a 32″ LCD TV (ok i know sony bravia is good but as of now my budget is limited only to more or less $1,000)
So samsung,Philips, JVC and Sharp is in in my budget
but am confused about “contrast ratio”
samsung has 7000:1
philips 1000:1
etc…
and all of them has 1366×768 pixels only the contrast [...]

Go with a 42″ Plasma then.
LCDs are inherently flawed with fast motion playback. They suffer from motion blur. Manufacturers compensate for this with 120Hz or 240Hz refresh rate options. While they help the issue a lot, they are not 100%. And you have to pay a heavy price premium for them.
