The plasma technology is reputed to less durable than lcd, lasting about 5 years. For the money I would get a HDTV, CRT — neither a lcd nor plasma.
As for content, the cable services offer MANY HD channels for the major channels and for other channels, too.

A 42″ plasma is cheaper than a 37″ LCD. Plasma gives you better picture for watching movies.

The best thing to do is consult a Sales Tech at a place like CompUSA who sales them and can answer based on the latest. I went there and bought a 32″ LCD b/c if and when the bulb goes out it is less to replace than a Plasma. however, Plasma has been making break throughs and I am just not sure how far. The LCD high Def has been spectacular!

LCD’s last longer, but since a plasma of the same size or larger is cheaper, you can always purchase a warranty so they can replace it no matter what happens to it.
I opted for a 42″ plasma with a two year warranty and ended up with $1200 from best buy.
for sure, picture quality is always better on an LCD but plasmas are cheaper per inch than an LCD.
one other thing to think about is your elevation, i’m from a highly elevated place and therefore my plasma’s lifespan will be shorter than advertised.
