All depends, there are currently brilliant set’s that range in this size from both lcd and plasma camps. The philips 42PFL9703D/10 lcd tv is supposed to be a good bet as theres been a recent review stating that its colours are vivid and natural and black’s are particularly strong for an lcd, and even said that the broadcast picture quality with satellite and freeview is among the best for a flatscreen, showcasing vivid and punchy clarity. Other excelllent sets are the plasmas from panasonic and pioneer. Pioneers PDP-428XD from its 2007 kuro lineup is a discontinued panel, but still has the features and performance to cope today with current 42 inch flatscreens. Its main feature being its terrific blacks which are still currently one of the best on a flatscreen and have only recently been bettered by pioneers newest lineup. People say that the colour accuracy on the pioneer is slightly lacking compared to the other panels in the pioneer 8g lineup, but everything else is truly excellent. Panasonic on the other hand have released a full hd 1080p 42 inch plasma which has gained high praise, the TH-42PZ800B 42 inch plasma tv is supposed to be excellent for movies, broadcasts and surprisingly good for games. Reviewer on trustedreviews.com said that with 360 and ps3 content, theres only very few that can match its overall performance. And the colour accuracy on this plasma is rich vibrant and tonal which adds up to make a very natural onscreen image. Panasonic’s newest plasma’s are supposed to be the most colour accurate plasma’s ever. Hope this info helps.

i beleive LCD to be the best
the picure tends tto be sharper and, crisper and brighter and the colours can be adjusted so they are more “true to life”
Also, you will find that, at an angle, with plasma screens, that the dark colours merge into one and the picture is not clear.
However, veiwing quality is not hindered at any angle with LCD
And, LCD is slightly more electric-bill-friendly.
Although, to be honest, the difference is minute.
I would advise that an LCD tv, paricuarly for this size -42″ would be a better choice by far
hopethis helps =]
It’s not down to picture, it’s down to how long your tv will last.
I have a 42″ plasma (this is my 2nd). The pic is perfect but I know that possibly 2 years down the line, it’s gonna blow – just like my last one. I’d spent £1500 on it and it lasted less than 20 months. It costs £600 to replace the part and the insurance said it’s not worth it as they have ome down in price now
A LCD will last you the longest and I’m sure that the pic quality is the same.
Without a shadow of a doubt the 42″ LCD is the best. LCD’s offer no glare, so you do not need to tilt or adjust your television for any lighting purposes.
I would choose the Toshiba Regza 1080p 42″ LCD. It is an awesome unit. I install televisions for a living and I have not received any negative feedback from clients who’ve purchased it. They always are pleased with their purchase. I also own a 42″ Regza and it produces an awesome picture with DirecTv HD satellite, box and programming. It is also extremely affordable compared to other units.
GO WITH THE LCD!
Here are a few consumer report links about the Regza:http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000MXYD0I/…http://www.trustedreviews.com/tvs/review…http://www.i4u.com/full-review-303.htmlhttp://reviews.pricegrabber.com/plasma-l…
YOU JUST CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS UNIT!
i have a 42″ lcd widescreen digital tv, and i am very pleased with the imaging. the lcd is less expensive than the plasma type, and draws less electricity. the model i have has many different connections for various electronics, such as hdmi, progressive scan, a/v, and sound. it is definitely one of the best purchases i have made within the last year.
You will find plasma is better for bigger screens – from 50 inch up but lcd is better for smaller screens 42 inches and down. I strongly recommend you get a 1080p lcd screen either samsung, sony or phillips which are all relieble and and have the best picture on the market. They are not to expensive either although plasma tend to be cheaper.
Hopes this helps
Thanks
plasma does give a better picture and is cheaper today. they have been reported to have burn in problems but that is all a bunch of crap. the reason people say this is because panasonic had issue with one model back in 1999 when they first came out. i currently own an lcd but am think about getting a plasma for the high contrast rate. also most plasmas are 720p but i personally think that 1080p is just a maeketing ploy
a plasma will eat your eletic alive but i suppose a plasma will but if the lcd got hd then the hcd as it wotn eat your eletric but its up to you only depends if its a 1080i to get quality picture or 1080p i think for sharp quality so only depends
hope this helps
LCD, plasma is a bit old now, and they break very easily, we have a samsung 42 inch LCD, it is an amazing tv and are very cheap now at currys, http://www.currys.co.uk
